Joint Statement from Disability Organizations in Support of the Michigan Secretary of State’s Response Efforts
Lansing, MI — Disability Rights Michigan, along with The Arc of Michigan, Brain Injury Association of Michigan, Detroit Disability Power, Disability Network Michigan, Michigan Developmental Disabilities Council, Michigan Disability Rights Coalition, Michigan Statewide Independent Living Council, and Promote the Vote, recognize the Michigan Secretary of State (MDOS) for their proactive response to address the recent discovery of a technical error that occurs with Dominion voter assist terminal machines in the state. This technical error is a result of a recent software update in the machines. By working closely with disability advocates, the Secretary of State has taken significant steps to ensure voters with disabilities are not left behind and the election process remains inclusive and accessible for all.
In response to recent events, MDOS acted swiftly to mitigate potential risks to the integrity of the election. Through open and frequent communication with disability advocacy partners, MDOS has ensured necessary measures are being implemented.
“We commend the Michigan Secretary of State for taking a proactive and transparent approach during this critical time. By addressing the issue and actively engaging partner advocacy organizations, the Secretary has shown a strong commitment to ensuring that Michiganders with disabilities who use voter assist terminals are not left behind,” said Rachel Prevatt, Voter Engagement Specialist for Disability Rights Michigan.
“We encourage election officials at every level to follow the Secretary of State’s lead to mitigate any voting disruptions. By doing so, we can ensure the voices of all voters are heard and that our democracy remains strong and inclusive”, said Rachel.
Election equipment contractors should hold themselves to the highest standard and provide proper maintenance and regular testing to ensure their machines are fully functional, safeguarding the integrity of our election process. These machines are at the heart of the voting process, and any malfunction or inaccuracy can undermine voter confidence. Ensuring every machine works as it should, especially for voters with disabilities, is critical to making elections accessible and fair for all.
As we move forward, DRM and its partners will continue to work with the Michigan Secretary of State to guarantee these efforts are sustained and expanded. Through demonstrated collaboration and transparency, we remain confident Michigan’s elections are conducted with the highest standards of security and transparency, ensuring that all voters can trust in the integrity and fairness of the process.
